Coalition For Truth
During a time when misinformation is common and often pervasive, it is important that we take measures to counter it. According to a study conducted by UCLA, nearly 50% of the information we encounter on social media is false or unreliable. Today, the percentages are even higher. We live in a time where misinformation has real consequences: it can incite division, fuel hate, and significantly contribute to the degradation of intellectual integrity in society and the loss of trust between the public and media institutions.
The youth today are more susceptible to misinformation because many lack digital and media literacy, critical thinking, and other cognitive tools needed to combat it. That is why it is important to teach critical thinking, digital and media literacy, and psychological skills to help young people resist misinformation.
That is exactly what the Coalition for Truth stands for.
Our work will include:
- Creating TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram videos to produce attention-grabbing but informative content, call out misinformation, discuss the psychological mechanisms that foster it, and teach fact-checking tools.
- Maintaining our website with digital and media literacy classes and consistent blogs that cover the “most viral misinformation of the day/week,” debunking it and providing alternative evidence to fact-check it.
- Working with experts to broaden our work and expand our reach in combating misinformation.
- Collaborating with districts and schools in different parts of the U.S. to fight misinformation by incorporating digital and media literacy and critical thinking lessons.
Values:
- Intellectual integrity
- Critical thinking
- Honesty
Goals
To take action in reducing misinformation directed at youth and to foster a more honest and rigorous online space.
Coalition for Truth is not a politically affiliated organization. We are dedicated to upholding intellectual honesty regardless of political affiliation.
Start a chapter at your school: Contact us at coalition.for.truth1@gmail.com if you are interested in starting a Coalition for Truth chapter in your high-school/college to help combat misinformation in your own institution. Some of the work you can do can include, hosting educational sessions that raise awareness about the different aspects of combating misinformation, ranging from psychological awareness to fact checking tools, and critical thinking skills and much more. It is vital to make sure that the chapter that you start in your own institution is aligned with the core values that are articulated at the coalition of truth. We will be conducting chapter meetings every six month to check in and make sure that all coalition for truth chapters are aligned and on the same page.
Raise Awareness about the prevalence of misinformation: Misinformation has sadly been incredibly prevalent on social media platforms. The line between what is factual and misinformative has been rendered to nothing and there is sadly a destructive digital culture of putting emphasis on agenda over facts, sources and objective analysis and so even things as “minor” as not partaking in this digital culture and calling misinformation out and taking measures to spread awareness about fact checking tools online is significantly effective.
Volunteer at Coalition For Truth: If you would like to help support the work we do and the development of our organization to help contribute to countering misinformation you can definitely email coalition.for.truth1@gmail.com to inquire about the potential for different opportunities, work ranges from temporary website development and social media management and much more.
